6 reasons why you need a copywriter

Unsure of how a copywriter could help your business? Here are six good reasons why you should consider hiring one…

  1. Time

“When this baby hits 88 mph, you’re gonna see some serious s***.” – Doc Brown (Back to the Future, 1985)

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could simply hop into the DeLorean whenever you needed a few hours back to tackle those forgotten tasks or meet those deadlines you let slide?

Unfortunately, that’s not possible (yet), so we’ll just have to manage with the hours we’ve got. If you have a business to run, do you have the time to make sure your website copy is working as well as it should, write new marketing collateral, post on social media AND keep your blog updated? Unless you’re Marty McFly, the answer is probably no.

This is where a copywriter/content writer can help. Our job is to commit our time to analysing every single word in order to make sure that your business looks and sounds as good as possible.

2. It’s good to get an outsider’s perspective

Perhaps your website copy is due a refresh, but you’ve stared at it for so long that the words don’t even make sense anymore.

It’s quite common to be so close to your business that you can’t write for it effectively. Before you gasp at the idea of that, hear me out. You’re passionate about your company, but it’s likely that your perspective will be very different from a potential customer’s. A freelance copywriter will give you an outsider’s perspective and look at the entire customer journey, making sure the right call to action is used in the right places.

3. We can make anything sound interesting

Copywriters know how to breathe life into some pretty niche topics such as engineering tools, hospitality equipment and machine software (to name a few that I’ve worked on). It’s our job to familiarise ourselves with your business, no matter how unique it might be, and bring it to life so that you can reach your ideal target audience and generate sales.

There is a true art to persuading people to do something without making it too obvious. Whether you are a hotel trying to fill rooms, a patisserie selling cakes, or a charity filling spaces for an event, most people are trying to persuade their target audience to do something. But customers don’t want to feel like they’re being pressured into making a decision, they want to feel engaged by your content. By hiring a copywriter like me, you don’t just get someone who can create captivating content, you also gain access to years of valuable marketing experience.

4. Too many communication platforms to manage

This links in nicely with the first point about time. The number of communication platforms that businesses are expected to market themselves on can be overwhelming, especially if you are a small business and don’t have the luxury of having a full-time marketing team to hand.

Creating enough content to feed all your channels, tailor it suitably, AND run a business at the same time can sometimes feel overwhelming.  However, there’s no need to worry, as this is exactly the kind of work that copywriters love. We understand the importance of brand language and can make sure that your message is unique to you, yet remains consistent across all channels.

5. You struggle to put your thoughts onto paper

Ever felt that you have the right words, but not necessarily in the right order? This is something I frequently come across.

When a new brief comes in, I like to have a call with the client to discuss their needs in more detail. I am always inspired by how passionate they are when they talk about their businesses, but when it comes to putting these thoughts onto paper, it’s hard for them. So, allow a copywriter to take these ideas and turn them into words that dazzle and motivate your potential customers.

Proofreading and editing is also a useful service that copywriters can provide you with. You might be confident when it comes to writing about your business, but there is nothing more harrowing than sending out a newsletter or an item for printing and realising that you’ve made a mistake. Let a copywriter cast their eagle eye over any work to give you peace of mind.

6. Cost-saving

We’ve already talked about how good copy can give you the power to reach your dream clients, generating more business for you and hopefully resulting in happy customers and repeat business, but how else can a copywriter save you money?

You may be thinking about hiring a marketing agency or a web designer to do the job instead. If your agency is managing multiple different elements for a marketing campaign then their fee will be justified, but if your project is mainly copy-based you might want to go straight to a copywriter. Why? Because agencies and web designers will often outsource their copy to people like me, and then increase the price to you.

And finally, if you’re ever questioning if you have the budget to hire a professional copywriter, remember this expression:
